This site is intended
to be a resource for the members of Tashi Lhunpo Buddhist Temple, in particular, and
for the Kalmyk people in general.
Olna Gazur can be
translated to English in several slightly different ways, but
it means, approximately, "The People's Gathering Place".
A few years after the first
Kalmyks came to the United States, a group of about 20 families bought
a piece of land in Howell, NJ, on which they all intended to build homes.
They called it Olna Gazur. A Buddhist Temple, and 5 houses were built
before legal problems ended construction. Today the temple is in active
use, there is a small social hall, and living quarters for the monks.
