Zul commemorates Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) the founder of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The Gelug tradition is the sect of Buddhism followed by most Mongolians including the Kalmyks of Tashi Lhunpo Temple in Howell. Zul is held on the 25th day of the 10th lunar month, in memory of Tsongkhapa's death on that day in 1419
